Open layouts in new tab

When editing layouts, I always find the need to navigate away from the layout to reference another page within the CMS. Once the layout is open, the only option is to save and exit to get to another page. I believe it would be more productive to open the layout on a new tab, which would allow for easy navigation to other pages because the original tab would still available.
